LYON TWP. — Westbound Interstate 96 in Lyon Township reopened on Tuesday after multiple Monday calamities.A semitrailer crash on westbound I-96 near Milford Road at 10:04 a.m. April 24 shut the freeway down from Milford to Kent Lake. There were no injuries, but emergency crews spent the rest of the day removing the truck from a guardrail and cleaning up flooring glue that spilled from the truck, as well as diesel fuel.

Then, just over 12 hours after that accident, at 10:27 p.m., Lyon Township firefighters responded to an accident involving two vehicles at westbound I-96 near South Hill Road, Fire Chief Ken Van Sparrentak said.

In that accident, one of the vehicles rolled over multiple times and caught fire. The person in the vehicle was able to escape. Van Sparrentak said he was not aware of the extent of the injuries to the occupants in the other vehicle.

The accident shut the freeway down in that section for more than two hours, with it reopening early on Tuesday.
