Start by selecting a planter with a flat surface with enough surface area to hold your wood round securely. To create a smooth, even surface for painting, give the planter a gentle sanding wherever you plan to adhere the tabletop. After sanding, wipe off any dust with a damp cloth.

If you want to paint the planter, especially if you're upcycling an old unused one, you have to prep first. Coat your planter with a layer of primer. The primer will help create a uniform surface, ensuring a better finish once the color paint is applied. Once the primer has dried, it's time to paint your planter! Apply two to three coats of paint, and seal it to preserve the finish.

While you wait for the planter to dry, prepare the wood round. Sand the wood round to ensure a smooth surface, and then wipe it down with a damp cloth to remove any dust. Now, stain or paint your wood round to match your planter! Apply two to three coats, allowing each coat to dry before adding the next.

Once both your painted planter and wood round are fully dry, it's time to assemble your side table! Apply a generous amount of adhesive (such as glue or construction adhesive) to the flat surface of the planter.

Position the wood round on the planter and press firmly for a secure hold. For extra stability, consider clamping the wood round and planter together and leaving them to cure. Enjoy your custom side table!
