From Espresso Nails To The New Nude, These Are The Biggest Autumn Nail Trends

Aug 18, 2023

By Georgia Day

If you’re unsure which nail colour to plump for as we segue into a new season, take a leaf from the style books of Victoria Beckham, Sofia Richie and Cara Delevingne, all of whom have recently stepped out with pre-emptively new season nails in varying shades of red. The autumn equivalent of a great nude nail, red helps any outfit look polished and pulled together, plus there’s a hue to suit every skin tone and colour palette. Essie’s Longwear Enamel in Paint the Gown Red is a fantastic failsafe for everyone, while Chanel’s Le Vernis in Bois des Iles is a brown-based shade inspired by the earthy colours of an Indian summer. If you dare to go deeper, Dior’s Vernis Nuit 1947 is a rich plum-purple red.

It might have been the movie of the summer, but the Barbie effect shows no sign of waning as we head into autumn, with #barbienails currently up to 213.3million TikTok views and counting. For a classic spin on the trend, a Barbie-inspired French manicure in contrasting shades of pink works well, or at the other end of the spectrum, mismatch pink prints, patterns and accessories for a kaleidoscope effect. In short, anything goes… so long as it’s pink. If you’re unsure where to start, let OPI’s OPI Loves Barbie collection guide you, it contains everything from saccharine sweet candy shades to frosted lacquers.

Consider this the new season successor to the viral latte make-up trend. “This type of manicure still works with a neutral aesthetic and is the perfect way to go dark in the colder months without reaching for gothic, vampy tones,” says manicurist Faye Louise Dennis. Like a natural contour for your nail, you can go as deep as you like, just make sure you choose a shade to match your skin’s undertones, whether warm, cool or neutral. If you’re looking for a rich chocolate shade, Dennis suggests BioSculpture’s Sunset Boulevard, or if you’re after a cooler tone, Chocolate Fudge is a good option.

Christmas may be months away, but lustrous metals and decadent chrome finishes are big news for nails now. “Our Glamourati collection celebrates the importance of texture and finishes with euphoric metallic hues,” says The Gel Bottle founder and CEO Daisy Kalnina. Peacci’s Soho Nail Polish, a deep crimson shot through with red glitter, is a playful take on darker tones. If you don’t want to commit to full-on sparkle, take Dennis’s advice and try layering a textured finish over another of the new season’s standout shades. “Add pearlescent chrome on top of a plain chocolate brown to make a ‘glazed chocolate doughnut’ nail, made popular by Hailey Bieber this year,” she says.

Nude nails are never not in vogue, and for autumn/winter 2023 they’re more elegant than ever. The couture collections had plenty to choose from, including pure and polished to match Peter Philips’s make-up brief at Dior, and milky nails at Valentino with the same understated elegance as Kaia Gerber’s runway look (she opened the show in jeans and a white shirt). The key to mastering the look, along with the perfect polish (OPI’S Nail Polish in Bubble Bath is a classic), is maintenance, so keep cuticles trimmed and healthy and be diligent with your daily application of cuticle oil. We love Nails Inc’s Superfood Repair Oil Hydrating Nail Treatment.
